The Kasey Ferguson Show was honored to be asked to create a custom station for The Cottage Coffee House in Westport, Ontario . Like many of us, Cottage Coffee doesn't care much for the stations available to them on the radio dial and the idea of just running a playlist conjured up by an algorithm wasn't very appealing to their business either. So, they called in The Kasey Ferguson Show to create them something more personal and entertaining. The result is a soundtrack unique to their shop. It is with great pleasure that The Kasey Ferguson Show and Cottage Coffee will officially launch The Frothy Coffee Sessions this Friday to play all summer long.

Renowned Cleveland-based artist DEREK HESS has tested the waters of both the music and art world for over 20 years. Recognized internationally for his poster work with bands such as Pantera, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam, as well as being featured brands like MTV, Vh1 and TLC, Hess' art has been featured everywhere from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the infamous Louvre in Paris.
After enriching the art and music world with his intricate and emotive drawing-based-art for over a decade, Derek Hess has finally translated his medium to film by way of his new documentary, Forced Perspective. This intimate self-portrait was directed by filmmaker Nick Cavalier and has already won awards at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Beverly Hills Film Festival and many others. Forced Perspective isn't just your average docu-story or even a biopic, but rather a journey through Hess' struggle with alcoholism and bipolar disorder and how these demons affect his artwork. This exploration presents a voyeur into Hess' personal life, revealing his process and philosophy. Forced Perspective showcases the evolution of a celebrated artist and his effect on music and culture while highlighting the link between creativity and mental illness.

Derek Hess first drew attention to his art by creating posters to advertise the bands he booked at Cleveland's Euclid Tavern. Posters for bands such as Helmet, Cop Shoot Cop, Jesus Lizard and Soul Coughing attracted people to the growing underground music scene in Cleveland while gaining Hess notoriety all over the world for his artwork.
In the early 2000's, Hess began holding concerts in Cleveland named Strhessfest where Hess' favorite bands would play such as Clutch, Converge, Every Time I Die, Unearth and Stretch Arm Strong. The bands were mostly hardcore and metal bands, both local and national, whose songs had the same subject matter as Hess' art: dark tones, heartbreak and depression. Strhessfest eventually expanded into Strhess Tour and lasted five years, touring both the US and Europe with bands such as Shadows Fall, As I lay Dying, Thursday, Bleeding Through and Poison The Well.

The Kasey Ferguson Show welcomes Derek Hess on Episode 24 (due out the end of April) for a candid discussion that touches on everything from his new documentary film and unique creative process to tattoos, music that gets the creative juices flowing, and mental health.

After her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos.
ABOVE : Chucky's new look
ABOVE : Oh, he's under the bed. That's a new one. ~Cue slow clap
ABOVE : "I'd rather fuck a warm pail of water".

Curse of Chucky , in spite of the last entry in the Child’s Play series (2004’s head shaker Seed Of Chucky) was one of 2013’s most anticipated horror releases. While I was disappointed in Curse of Chucky, at least the prayers of long-time fans (myself included) of “God and or Don Mancini please don’t let it end this way” have been answered.

The movie begins with our heroine to be, Nica (played by Fiona Dourif ,daughter of actor Brad Dourif who voices Chucky) who happens to be confined to a wheelchair abruptly receiving an anonymous package  which of course turns out to be a certain Good Guy doll. Soon thereafter Nica’s mom dies suddenly which as one would expect is no accident. Soon the vultures… AHEM… I mean family arrive to “help” Nica with her mother’s affairs and almost not soon enough, Chucky is up to his old tricks again.

First off I appreciate Writer/ Director Don Mancini ‘s decision to return the series to it’s horror roots. Seed Of Chucky was clearly an attempt to cash in on the comedic side of Chucky which was not surprising given the success of it’s predecessor Bride Of Chucky. However, while Bride certainly had a lot of laughs playing off a rom com backbeat it also didn’t forget it was a horror movie. Seed Of Chucky went too far into comedy and regardless of it’s Psycho riffage, had little to offer that was appealing to most horror fans. It’s about balance. That said Curse of Chucky perhaps takes itself a little too seriously with very little humour to be had. You can still have a serious movie with a few laughs after all. Just don’t overdo it. I’m also appreciative of getting a new installment in the series as opposed to a reboot which was the not so original first plan for the series that was thankfully passed on. If only we could have saved A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th and Halloween from their fate.

Curse Of Chucky is high on gothic imagery, atmosphere and ideas that unfortunately fall short of their mark. Don Mancini’s direction is strong , the cinematography and over all look of the film are far above what one would expect given the films low budget and the fact that Curse Of Chucky is the first film in the series released direct to video, but sadly , it’s strengths aren’t enough to overpower the films many weaknesses. Curse of Chucky tries to incorporate new technology (how many times have we seen that?), play off the dynamic of a dysfunctional family and show us Chucky can be scary again, all of which on paper are sound ideas ,but all 3 ideas miss their target leaving us with a film that while isn’t the worst in the Child’s Play cannon,  isn’t quite the return to form most of us were hoping for.

I can chalk up most of the films problems into 2 categories. Acting and scripting. While Fiona Dourif is fantastic as Nica the rest of the cast are for the most part pretty horrible. The technology angle, family dynamic and scares all could have been greatly improved with better casting and slight script adjustments.  The over use of fake out jump scares doesn’t help matters and even Brad Dourif gets precious little to work with from the script as the voice of Chucky. When Chucky reveals himself it should be a moment. It wasn’t. I kept waiting Chucky to hit me with a memorable line. It didn’t happen. Then there is the stab at being provocative or titillating by having a lesbianic adulterous affair sub plot. Let me tell you, when these ladies make out on screen you’ll find yourself looking for a shovel to clear away the bullshit. They are about as lesbianic as Arnold Schwarzenegger and the scene in which these thespo lesbos kiss is about as lurid as an episode of M*A*S*H*.

We are treated to some backstory via flashback however, and while it doesn’t work completely it’s the strongest part of the film. Brad Dourif for the first time since the original Child’s Play portrays Charles Lee Ray, the killer whose soul became trapped in the Chucky doll. A lot of makeup and lighting tricks were used to achieve this but all things considered I think they did a rather convincing job of making Brad look 25 years younger. There are some beautiful shots in this flash back scene and while I have a hard time believing that Chucky was gung ho to be a family man, I’m glad the movie went back in time if only for a little while. Personally I think a prequel would have been the way to go with the series.

While there is a fantastic decapitation scene that would likely appeal to newbies and long-time fans alike I’d only recommend this movie to dedicated fans of the series .There is a bit of a tacked on ending to Curse of Chucky but, it was clearly for the fans I speak of and “just in case this is it for the franchise” so I can forgive it. At the end of the day I’m glad we got another Chucky movie, and I’m glad it wasn’t half as shitty as Seed Of Chucky. Curse of Chucky could have been better, but it also could have been worse. Sometimes you have to count your blessings.

The allure of easy money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called "freakish" clients.
Above: Katherine Isabelle as Mary Mason. I just realized I've been having this picture a staring contest for the last 8 or so hours.

Shot in 15 days and financed by Writer/Directors Jen and Sylvia Soska ‘s parents re-mortgaging their home, American Mary is a gritty, unsettling and spellbinding film that will likely fly over the heads of heads of mainstream viewers and critics alike for a variety of reasons but will go down in the minds and hearts of genre fans as one of 2012’s best horror films and undoubtedly become a cult favorite.

American Mary is the tragic tale of Mary Mason who is played to perfection by the delicious Katherine Isabelle. Mary is a medical student and aspiring surgeon who when faced with financial woes ends up taking her scalpel skills to the black market for some quick coin. She’s invited to a surgeon’s party by her teachers and figuring this to be a great opportunity for her she accepts the invitation. When Mary is drugged, raped and video -taped by her professor her vengeance is swift and her hand is steady.

While American Mary will no doubt be lumped in with other rape/ revenge films like I Spit On Your Grave and Last House On The Left  because of some of it’s truly disturbing sequences and subject matter , I think American Mary has a lot more going for it than either of those films. Some viewers may be put off by these things and the film’s quirky characters, pacing and brutality but if you are going to dismiss The Soska Sisters for those reasons you’d have to do the same to a little director by the name of Quentin Tarantino… if you are reading this and don’t like Tarantino stop reading and kindly go fuck yourself :) .

Now onto my future ex -wife, the oh-so spicy Katherine Isabelle. Admittedly, like many I’ve been smitten with Katherine since catching her in the fantastic Canadian coming of age werewolf film Ginger Snaps back in 2000. I jumped up so fucking fast when she appeared onscreen in Freddy vs. Jason that I got fucking jump burn. As fetching as she is (and that’s pretty fucking fetching) I wouldn’t be half as taken with her if she weren’t so innately talented. Her performance here is nothing short of remarkable. Katherine handles the jet black comedy with great comedic timing and delivery and is able carry the dramatic aspect of the film even when there is no dialogue. Oh yeah….and we’re treated to Katherine in sexy and sometimes skimpy outfits and an all too brief striptease in this movie as well. Can I get a hell yeah?

Since we’ve got the gushing out of the way (quiet you) I’ll admit there is some truth to there being some uneven aspects of the acting of some of the supporting cast and a few moments where the dialogue seems forced which perhaps is most evident in just about anything David Lovgren does in this film as Mary’s overzealous professor Dr. Grant and the “I’m a fucking mother fucker” line from Nelson Wong as Dr. Black. However the majority of these follies can be shrugged off with a laugh and there are some excellent darkly comedic chuckles to be had here.  The character Lance for instance has a couple of great lines “We’ve got a cluster fuck” and “Titties and shrimp” that unlike all of those facebook conversations WILL have you laughing out loud for real. There is also a comical scene between Lance and Mary involving a milkshake (that was likely a tip of the hat to Pulp Fiction) which will put a smirk on your face.

The Soska Sisters aka The Twisted Twins skills might not be fully realized yet as they are really just getting started but with American Mary they made a moody, brooding and bludgeoning film that gives me great hope in their potential as filmmakers. Their use of different versions of “Ave Maria” to mirror Mary’s growth as a surgeon didn’t go unnoticed by me and it tells me that they know the devil is in the details. I know the critics are going to focus on the caustic violence in the film but The Twins know how to create a tense atmosphere, imply scares and make people use their imagination too. The long static shot of Dr. Grant on the operating table during Katherine Isabelle’s monologue as Mary eerily explains some popular body modifications is proof of this.  To make a film like this takes guts and conviction, both of which are needed now perhaps more than ever in the entertainment industry .Also I must give the gals props for their use of only practical effects in American Mary and high five Ma and Pa Soska for putting up the money for this film. Much obliged.

I highly recommend American Mary to fans of such alternative horror films as May, Cabin In The Woods and of course Ginger Snaps. Fans of Fear DOT Com and The Grudge can kindly fuck off.
